This rare wine bottle depicts a beautiful Caribbean (?) black woman in a striped dress and turban decorated with flowers. The paper label on the bottoms reads, “Genuine Italian Majolica, Hand moulded and decorated, Italy.” It is unopened, yet empty. I think the wine slowly evaporated out of the piece as the dark areas on the woman’s dress and turban attest.
The paper labels and seal at the top are all intact. Note, the importer label (Hulse) dates this to at least the 1960s, it may be even older.
No chips or cracks, but there is crazing on the piece.
Approximately 10.25” tall and 4.25” wide.
Paper labels read:
Girolamo Luxardo-Torreglia, Produce of Italy, Wild Blackberry Ardo Wine, ⅝ US Quart; Sole Agents
Hulse Import Co., San Francisco Cal.
Girolamo Luxardo 1821 Excelsior Trademark
The mark on the bottom is Italy with a paper label that reads: Genuine Italian Majolica, Hand moulded and decorated, Italy
Hulse Import Co -- “This was my dad's fine wine and spirits business on Brannon Street in San Francisco. The bottles and vases held the Luxardo liquor from Italy. Dad sold the business in the early 60s (I believe) because he could no longer compete with the big companies.” - http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=004kmr
