This beautiful set of vintage decanters features a man and woman in traditional Dutch clothes….right down to their wooden shoes! The details on these bottles are amazing from the tiny pinstripes and outlining of the buttons on the man’s shirt to the roses and pinstripes on the woman’s dress and apron, the tiny beads of her necklace, and the design on her hat. The man is standing casually with a bottle of Bols under each arm and the woman is holding a wine bottle in front of her. These are hand painted pieces made in Holland, but I am not sure if they are truly considered Delft.
The man once held Green Creme De Menthe and the woman held Creme De Cacao.
Each has a paper label on the front that says “Bols Liqueurs since 1575” and labels on the back with descriptions of the contents and the import/distribution in the US label. Please see pictures for the state of the labels.
No chips or cracks on either piece.
Marker’s marks: Zenith Gouda and Made in Holland
Man is approximately 10.5” tall and 3.25” wide. Woman is approximately 10” tall and 3.5” wide.
The company, Lucas Bols Distillery was established in 1575 and therefore is the oldest Dutch distillery still active. Bols likely started using Zenith to make their decanters around 1940 until 1984 when Zenith Pottery closed its doors. According to Kovels, these bottles were made in the 1940s and 1950s.
