Cost Plus had its beginning in Amthor Imports, a San Francisco import company founded in the 1920s, which dealt mainly in rattan furniture, grass cloth, and related products from the Far East. Confronted with a surplus of rattan furniture in the mid 1950s, two of the store's employees, William Anithor, the owner's son, and Lincoln Bartlett, devised an innovative solution for a quick sale: they rented a warehouse, stocked it with the furniture and shirts for Hong Kong and sold it at low prices on a self-serve basis. This sale was so successful that the pattern was repeated. Cost Plus opened in its present form in the fall of 1958 and gradually absorbed the parent concern.
