Beautiful brown bowl with irises and a gold speckled trim and ruffled edges. I found it interesting that there is raised area in the bowl that goes along the stem of one of the flowers. Mark has letters W' (Wheeling) and 'P' (Pottery) on the sides of the torch the 'La BELLE' / 'CHINA'. There is some crazing on the bottom and one chip on the underside (see pictures). There is a spot on the edge that looks like the brown was worn off (I cannot feel) a chip, but that may have been introduced when the bowl was made. This bowl would have been made between 1887 and 1909. It is approximately 9” wide and 2.5” tall.
Susan and Al Bagdade’s Warman’s American Pottery & Porcelain, 2nd Edition (Krause Publications, 2000; 302 pages, $24.95) provides this information about pottery made by the Wheeling Pottery Company of Wheeling, West Virginia: “The Wheeling Pottery Company was organized in 1879 in Wheeling, West Virginia, where it made plain and decorated white granite ware. In 1887, it formed a second company with the same management called La Belle Pottery Company and made plain and decorated Adamtine China and utilitarian wares. Two years later, the two companies joined together..… In 1909, the name was changed to Wheeling Sanitary Manufacturing Company. The company went into receivership and was reorganized to make sanitary ware.”
